Rural Tourism Accomodation.
muyong cabins.
Mountains, bamboo and rice – dominant shapes of Vietnam to this day. In the international design competition of Arquideas.net, we looked for answers to the problems of local tourism: in our solution, we placed tourist hostels with a natural world into a world heritage site.
Location: Mu Cang Chai, Vietnam
Architects, creators: András Zsuky, Endre Dér
Year of planning: 2020
Floor plan area: 400 m2

On the flooded terraces of the rice fields around the Mekong River, it seems like time has stopped. The work and living conditions of farmers wearing conical hats have hardly changed in recent millennia, so it is no wonder that the unspoilt countryside has become an increasingly popular destination for tourists. The theme of the architectural design competition was to design accommodation buildings for the visitors, which we accepted with great enthusiasm. The main aspect of our concept, developed through long brainstormings, was to preserve the integrity of nature and rice fields, and to work with local materials with minimal intervention.

Above the rice terraces, there is the so-called muyong, or forest area, having the most beautiful view to the valleys – we have scattered our modular cabins here. Our structures were formed from a bundle of bent bamboos, having three stories. There is a water block on the ground floor level with composting toilet, on the middle level there is a living room-kitchen, and on the upper level there is a panoramic bedroom. Around the cabins, we also placed social areas: a bar, a community space and a natural clay-filled swimming pool.
